Siddha Lee Lacey, owner of On The Rocks, put another tall glass filled to the brim in front of a regular that came in almost every night, and picked up the money in its place.
"Will that be all for tonight?" She asked wiping her hands off on her jeans.
"Yes, darlin'," he said then retreated into his own thoughts and she let him be. She rubbed the back of her head, which was covered with black curls that were so short they sat flat against her skull. Siddha had owned the bar for about three years and knew the man that sat before her for about that long, and in all that time, they hadn't ever spoken more than three sentences to one another in one night. She wondered what his story was, but left it alone. Everyone was entitled their own privacy.
That's probably why the old man comes here so often; nobody talks to him, she thought.
Her grey eyes swept over the place and what few customers that were there were occupied; the glasses mostly full. This was regular for a Wednesday night, but over the weekend the place was a mad- house. ON a week-night, she could be the only one olding down the fort and everything would be fine, but during the weekends, she had to have almost five other people working along side her. After checking everyone once more, she grabbed a book that her cousin had lent her, slid into a chair behind the bar and kicked her booted feet up to rest on the edge of it. She flipped through the book trying to find where she left off.

Siddha had just found the paragraph she'd left off at when she heard a man's voice speak., looking up, she saw a man sitting across from her.
"O'course we have whiskey, wouldn't call the place a bar if we didn't," she said closing the book, only to realize that she'd have to find that blasted page again. But, she put it down, reached for a glass, filled it with whiskey and set it down in front of the man. She looked at him closely. "You look like you've had a hard night, this one's on the house, friend."
She took a bottle of water from the fridge and took a swig and leaned up against the counter. She always did things like this to test if the certain customer wanted to talk or be left alone. Because there was, indeed, a stereotypical bartender appearance to uphold. Bartenders were like psyciatrists that spoke bluntly and cussed while at it.

Siddha laughed when he spoke about his ex-girlfriend, for some reason that kind of thing tickled her. She drank some more water, which was difficult because she was still grinning like a fool. She choked a bit when he asked the question. "Exciting?" she raised an eyebrow, "You don't come here very often, do you? Well, I guess sometimes it can get crazy around here, but no, not tonight, definately not anything close to your little occurance." She laughed again; she really wasn't cruel and didn't enjoy swimming in other people's misery, she simply spoke her mind. "Was she pretty? Your girlfriend's girlfriend, I mean... Oh," she added as an after-thought, "and don't feel pressured to answer. If you want me to shut-up, just say so." She flipped the top back onto her bottle of water.

Siddha's shoulders shook as he bad-mouthed the girl. And let out a laugh when he did. When she sobered up a bit, she introduced herself, "Good evening Monsier Matt, I'm Siddha Lee, humble owner of this humble establishment." She gave an exaggerated bow and grinned. "Well, I suppose if I was humble I wouldn't have mentioned it in the first place."

Score, this had to be a record, she thought pleasantly. She'd just made someone, whose night could have been a complete drag, laugh. Oh, she loved this job, she really did. "Can I get you anything else?" she asked seeing the empty glass. "Or are you driving home tonight?"

"Night then," she said as she watched him leave. "Glad I could be of some service," she mumbled. She sighed and began flipping through the book trying to find where she left off.
*********** Later that night **********
Siddha Lee stood on the side of the road shivering in her short-sleeve shirt and whistled into the night air, and sure enough, a cab came rolling around the corner and stopped right in front of her.
"Good evening, Miss Lacey," said the cab driver.
"More like good morning; its nearly two a.m.," she replied opening the back door and helping old man Zack, who was currently intoxicated, inside. "Take him home safe for me?"
"You know I will, Miss Lacey."
Siddha passed him some money through the window to take Zack home, then stepped back onto the curb and waved them good-bye.
When the red lights of the car disappeared into the distance, she turned and walked inside her bar exhausted. It hadn't been a particularily busy night, but she'd been at it for almost ten hours straight.
She ran her fingers through her very short curly hair and flipped the sign so that it said "Closed" and locked the glass door. Her room was upstairs above the bar, but she didn't feel like going there just yet. Instead, she made some coffee and sat at one of the tables.
